What are cosmeceuticals
What are cosmeceuticals

Neither FDA nor EMA have an official category for cosmeceuticals, as such. However, there are clear differences between cosmeceuticals and cosmetic skin care products.

Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products usually made of pharmaceutical-grade ingredients and formulated, developed and tested with more rigorous scientific processes/programs and often require treatment protocols and procedures compared to the cosmetics found at department stores, pharmacies and drug stores.

Furthermore, cosmeceuticals products usually include treatment options above and beyond the traditional categories of normal, dry or oily skin types, including effective, documented treatments for skin conditions such as Acne, Rosacea, Hyperpigmentation, and sensitive/irritated skin, as well as anti-aging.

Suitable candidates for cosmeceutical treatment

Given the great potency of cosmeceutical formulas, it is vital that these products are used and sold through properly trained, authorized and knowledgeable clinics and practices. Many cosmeceuticals brands offer not only efficacious and truly excellent options for well trained beauticians and skin therapists working at salons and spas, but also more active options available only for healthcare professionals (physicians and registered, qualified nurses) who need to be specifically trained and authorized to perform treatments utilizing these more potent products within the brand portfolio. These products typically penetrate deeper, have higher level of active ingredients, and/or lower pH values, which by law require healthcare professionals to administer.

Each and every one of us can benefit from using cosmeceuticals

Cosmeceuticals can be used by all skin types and ages. We are all individuals with our own unique skin so it is all about defining your skin type and condition and helping you to feel the best of yourself and most comfortable in your skin – whatever it may be!

While cosmeceuticals are very effective in treating specific skin conditions, everyone who wants to give their skin the best possible care, even if having no specific issues, will benefit from the products as they allow you to feel and look great regardless your age or gender, and can help to prevent aging and other skin problems over time.

Given the potency of the products, it is important that each of the end-users/patients go through a skin analysis conducted by a skin care professional – be it a dermatologist, an aesthetic doctor, nurse or a certified aesthetician. Therefore, both professional treatments and home care cosmeceutical products are available to end users/patients through practices, clinics and spas who will have diagnosed and analyzed each of the patients and developed an individualized regimen specifically for them. This guarantees the best possible regimen and outcomes to each of the person using these great products.

Specific skin conditions where cosmeceuticals can help

When looking at some of the specific skin conditions, some of the most common and more visible which can have grave influence on persons self esteem and mental well-being include acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, sensitive/irritated/rash prone skin, as well as aging skin. Here are some examples of before and after images of real patients while treating these conditions with cosmeceuticals. The examples shown demonstrate results achieved by using PCA Skin® cosmeceutical skin regimen for the specific skin condition:

  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Visible signs of ageing

Carefully developed treatment plan

It takes a commitment from both the professional and the patient to carefully assess the skin, develop a treatment plan and then implement and comply with the individualized treatment regimen – including professional sessions and daily care.

It is quite normal that the regimen may also change over time or seasonally, following the skin condition and aging. But the results can be amazing and help you to feel the best you can be in your skin!
